I can't believe it has been so long since I wrote a post. There has been so much going on. This is such a good place for me to connect and also put my own thoughts in order that I need to be more diligent about keeping it up.
Hub did get the job that he wanted and actually had his last day at work today. He is taking off a couple of days and will start Monday. He is really excited. That makes me happy, too and will take a little pressure off of us. We don't know where this adventure will lead us yet. The execs had all asked him about relocation, but we also heard that there are opportunities right here. Being the planner that I am, I will be glad when he gets further into this and can maybe where our future will be. He will be travelling quite a bit, but we used to be very familiar with that. (Love those airline miles.) He will be heading to St. Louis, MO for a few days the first week.
I did not get to make the trip to see my son that I mentioned on my last post. Hub went on and took our nephew with him to visit. My son and his cousin are really close so that was a treat for him. The only thing was that since the cousin is not immediate family, they had to have a non-contact visit. (Separated by glass.) That is one of those times when this reality really sets in. Anyway, we are planning to visit on Saturday and will be back on February 22 when they are FINALLY going to have a graduation ceremony. He hasn't had too many positive things going in awhile. Can't wait to share that with him.
The reason that I did not get to go last time was that our younger son got really sick. He had been at a sleepover on Friday night and they were playing hide-n-seek outside that night. He decided to hide in some tall ornamental grass. Good decision for an asthmatic. Anyway, he called me the next morning saying he was having a hard time breathing. I pulled out his nebulizer and started breathing treatments. He continued to have a hard time so we ended up Sunday spending half a day at an urgent care center. We were afraid that he was going into pneumonia but the chest xrays showed it was not that yet. He was diagnosed with acute asthmatic brochitis and started on steroids and antibiotics and kept up the breathing treatments every 4 hours. He still wasn't getting any better so Wednesday morning, we went to his pediatrician. His oxygen saturation on Sunday had been at about 90% when we got there and I knew several times that it had to have been lower by how pale he was. Anyway, it was about 93% on Wednesday and the doc said that usually they hospitalized at about 92 so he ended up sending us to the ER at the children's hospital for xrays and tests. That of course turned into another full day. It's a great hospital and it turned out to be a really busy day for them with a lot of waiting for us. Because of his breathing problems, we were put into a room where my son got his first taste of a hospital gown. (That is a whole other post.) They hooked him up to a constant oxygen monitor that really had me a little frightened. His levels flucuated between 90 and 93. I stepped out to get a drink and came back in to the respiratory therapist in there giving him another treatment. She said that she and the nurse ran in there when his numbers went down to 88%. Anyway, they got him back up to 100%, but when the treatment stopped it started going down again. The doc finally decided though that he was getting strong enough doses of the antibiotic and steroid and increased it and sent us home. He did finally seemed to turn around the next day and he was allowed to go back to school with restrictions on Friday. This was the first time he had been through a really bad bout of asthma. He usually takes a preventative and really only needs he rescue inhaler very rarely or when his mom makes him take it for sports. This one was really scarey. So he and I had a week off from school and then today they closed the schools due to ice. Just kind of makes me miss being a stay-at-home mom.....but I want my healthy child back.
I did have something else exciting this week. I got a new refrigerator. The last time I bought a frig was 15 years ago. My old Maytag was moved between 3 states and 6 houses and refused to quit. The plastic pieces were breaking inside and the light started hanging down and wouldn't go back up so enough is enough. It had served us well. We now have one of those shiny stainless steel jobs with the freezer on the bottom and two doors up top. The diamond of my kitchen!!!! I'm just a simple girl with simple tastes....
Need to run now. My son has talked Hub into going out to his favorite hamburger place for dinner. Works for me. No cooking!

Happier Thoughts
Ever notice how life seems swing back and forth with good situations and then tough situations? I guess I have had a pity party long enough. I finally feel like we are in a bit of an upswing. Did I really say that out loud??? Yikes!
A corporate recruiter called Hub about a month ago regarding a position that it is more in his field. Since then he has had three interviews with this company; the last being with a vice president. Yesterday they called an old business colleague of his - that now works for this company - and asked him about Hub. The recruiter was trying to reach him yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, when Hub leaned down to kiss his still-sleeping, lazy wife, his phone fell out into the bed and was left at home. Now we have to wait until Tuesday since Monday is a holiday. Hub is really excited over this position. I hope it works out. He would have a lot more professional gratification and it should be more money. We should be able to get on a better family schedule again. We have been "ships passing in the night". He's off when we are in school and vice versa. (He has been helping more around the house on those days because he gets lonesome. I will miss that!) At every interview though, he was asked if he would relocate after training. Of course we will, but rather not. I hate to think of possibly moving farther away until my son is back with us and he definitely cannot leave the state until July 2010. Keep this situation in your prayers.
We are going to go visit our son tomorrow. I'm anxious to see him. He wrote his dad that he didn't look so good right now. That's never a good thing. He is living in such a different universe. I have had people in the state office tell me that, too. He's so young. I just don't want him to get use to that being the norm.
My newest neighbors came home from the hospital after only one week and one day. They are so beautifully perfect. I went over to see them and when new daddy came to the door, he looked like he was holding a Subway sandwich. That is how big they are. They are now about 4-1/2 pounds each and they were so beautiful! I just kept staring. I'm really happy for the parents and can't wait to spend more time with the babies. I took them blue and pink baby Bibles with their names on them and some preemie diapers. (Those looked like eyeglass wipes.)
Our younger son was at a birthday sleepover last night so Mom & Dad had a welcomed night to themselves. We had a leisurely dinner at a seafood restaurant. We had thought about going to a movie but we got a late start and lingered so long over dinner that we decided to just come home and watch TV in bed. As my MIL once said, "A good time was had by all."
I'm in the middle a a four-day weekend. I was suppose to work Friday but it was a student holiday and without them, I don't have as much work. Also, there were some office switching going on and I figured that I would probably just be assigned the grunt work. I've done my share so I decided to take a personal day instead. Yea, Me! I have a hard time not helping and then sometimes get mad at myself.
Have a great weekend. Thank you for sharing your lives with me and letting me share with you. Think happy thoughts!

Christmas, New Years, Babies. Whew!
I'm still here. Guess I need to feed this blog a little something-something. It does sometimes have a life of it's own you know. You start out on one thing and never know where it will take you.
Baby-oh-baby! There are babies everywhere today. I came home and checked my e-mail and found that my neighbor delivered her twins yesterday. Can't wait to meet them! Then I checked in on a blog buddy, and their baby had just been born. They have been waiting for an adoption and things just took off fast and they now are the parents of a beautiful little girl. They had just started the process in August. God so works in very mysterious ways. I'm so glad he does.
Christmas and New Years were........here and gone. Not sure what to say about it. I want to wholly celebrate the birth of my Saviour and at the same time it is so obvious that people are missing in our lives. It's not just our son I'm thinking about but I really missed mom, MIL and FIL even more this year. There was just too much at one time. My eleven year old is SO in to traditions. He keeps us in line that way. I guess that is part of his security right now in an offbeat world. We are so lucky to have him. We got to visit our older son the weekend between holidays and then we went down to Houston and spent a weekend with family. That was just what we needed. We also spent New Years Eve with three other families that we are close to and New Years Day with the neighbors. Yes....we did have blackeyed peas. No sense in tempting fate.
I'm not sure what to think about our son these days. Sometimes I see so much hope and then there are other times. I've been reading some books about prisoners getting comfortable with their situation. I can see that happening. Not that the loss of freedom, missing family and fear for life aren't effecting him. But he doesn't have to step up and support himself in there. He is still just a kid in so many ways. They say that the world stops for someone in prison. He was young when he went in and for 2-3 years before that, we were just talking to the drugs, not to our son. We have talked to people on all levels and have gotten different answers from each. That could be part of the problem. We did get a nice letter from our state representative that actually looked like it wasn't a form letter and that she had read ours. In the end, his future lies in God's hands and he has given our son the free will to make his own choices. Good, bad and ugly. We need to live our own lives and make our own mistakes. Sometimes, life is just easier than others.
Well, my younger son and I are both back in school. I think that the routine of that is somewhat of a relief. It's just that early morning alarm that gets me. :) The kids at school also seem a bit more settled than they were in December.
The boy that I told you about after Thanksgiving (the one with the bleeding in the brain) has come back to school. He is taking it easy but looks good. Just has bandaid at each temple. Isn't that amazing! So happy for his family.
Hub has a second interview tomorrow for a pretty good job. He is finally getting more comfortable with where he is at. He was also told this week that papers have been signed for his own store. Who knows what will happen? Crazy!!
Poor Travolta family. I've watched all of that and just feel so sorry for them. It also bugs me that the press keeps bringing up the "Kawasaki Syndrome". First of all, it is "Kawasaki Disease". My older son had it when he was 4-1/2. It is very, very serious and will scare you to death. Most of the symptons like seizures would have happened a lot sooner than 14 years later. According to what I have read anyway and the heart is a much stronger issue. My son had echocardiograms every two weeks for a long time after he had it to see if there were any changes in his heart. They wouldn't sign off on him for one year. When he was 14, he passed out on the track at school and because of his history, they ended up doing a heart catherazation. Thankfully, everything was good. That did give us closure. Anywho, I am no doctor and I guess it does bring attention to a rare disease and could possibly save a child. That's all good. Just wish the media would check out what they are saying.
Anyway, I'm still kicking, dancing, working, etc. Don't pay the ransom just yet. I've escaped!

I AM thankful after all. I just didn't know it.
The next time I start blogging about not being thankful, I hope someone will stop me. I am really being taught about thankfulness. Last week, a co-worker shared with me that she was divorcing her husband. I had suspected that something was going on, but waited for her to tell me. She has moved out, is in debt up to her neck, working with custody attorneys, and starting over after 17 years. Besides other things, she found out that hubby hadn't pay taxes for awhile so who knows where the end will be. We were just at their Halloween party at their over-the-top amazing home. You never know what people are going through.
Then Monday morning, a sweet, quiet father came in the office first thing and handed me an envelope. Actually I thought that it might be a Christmas card. I opened it to see the nice stationery of a local children's hospital asking to excuse his son from school. His 12 year-old son is in ICU and it stated that "his discharge was uncertain". He said that his son has bleeding in his brain that has been undetected since birth. It would keep bleeding until eventually, the boy would pass out and die. His history teacher passed by and said that he knew that the boy had not felt well for the past few days. That poor man stood there with frightened eyes and in less than perfect English asked for the prayers of the school. They are meeting with doctors to decide a course of action.
Today, one of our students was wheeled in by his father for a visit. This boy fell out of a tree. A thirty-foot fall! He had many broken bones including face, arm and leg. Evidently, this kid is quite a rascal, but how lucky is he to be alive? He was grinning and loving the story. Boys!!
OK So the moral of this story is that I AM thankful that I have an intact, "mostly functioning well" family. I am thankful that I have 2 healthy boys. I am thankful that I have the hope that this will be the last Christmas that we have to spend separated...until we have to share with the family of a daughter-in-law. I'm even thankful that I am in a place to have this hard lesson taught to me.
Don't ever say that you are not thankful! The lesson is not easy.

Thankfulness.
I guess you can tell that I'm working myself up for Christmas. The spirit is getting there, but the body isn't actually following yet. Translation: I've watched Christmas movies all day and ordered a few things online. Other than that I have been a slug all day.
Really I'm not sure that I'm quite through with Thanksgiving. I have thought long and hard about this holiday. I reminded myself many times and truly was thankful for the fact that I still have TWO sons. That fact could of easily changed this year. One is with me and the other is with me in my dreams. I planned what I would wear Thursday so that my outfit would match a necklace that my son made me while he was in rehab. I just wanted something of him close. It broke while I was putting it on with beads rolling all over my sister's bathroom. Guess that "things" don't quite measure up. I kept thinking all day how he was probably imagining all that we were doing. Knowing that family traditions he loved were going on without him. Remembering the circle of family holding hands with heads bowed in thanks. The dinner plates piled too high with good food. Football on the TV. The newest little baby being passed around. Most special to him....the family football game with his dad, brother, uncles and cousins. Family tradition. Somehow I felt a little cheated for him and for me, too.
Then we drove back home and of course I check what is going on with my cyber friends. There was Birdie who has walked her own rocky path with her son giving thanks that it was him and not someone else that fought this fight. Someone else may not have had the support and strength that her son has been blessed with. He has come out stronger and someone else might not have. Her marriage has been tested and proven strong by this reality. I know that we too have been so blessed by a son that is alive to dream of family traditions, by a marriage that sustains us, and the love of an extended family that doesn't truly understand, but tries to. But thankful that this is the walk that is our life? I'm not. The pain is still too raw. I keep a lot of it to myself because Hub is so easily stirred up about the whole situation and that's a whole other painful scenario that I rather not deal with.
So for now, I will just press on to the next holiday. Maybe next year I can reach the level of thankfulness that I wish I could this year. I'm not there yet. Thanks, Birdie for leading the way.

YEA ME!!!
Can I just say that I'm proud of me? You won't hear me say that too often, but right now I am. I just knocked some major names off of my Christmas list and it is not even Thanksgiving. Omaha Steaks....you are my friend. We have a lot of extended family and I use to spend way too much blood, sweat and tears over shopping, wrapping and mailing presents. It's nuts! I drive myself and everyone around me crazy. Anyway, I have decided on steaks and another company that makes the most fabulous brunch baskets....that the way I'm rolling. Pay just a little extra and they will make them beautifully Christmasy and send them on their way. Priceless!!!
I really have enjoyed this week. It was unseemly smooth. Even got some lower priority jobs done. Today is Friday. Yea! Next week will be a two-day work week. Bigger Yea! Yep, it was too good to be true. All of the crazies waited to come in today. Administration was in back-to-back meetings all afternoon. I had one lady who decided to have a sit-in in my office until she could talk to the principal. I kid you not. She had no appointment and refused to fill out any kind of paperwork to start a grievance. She was there for over four hours. Guess what she was upset over? Her daughter had been called out over a dress code violation. Her cute little precious had the shortest skirt on. Her hoo-ha was showing. I had to ask her to put her backpack in front of her while she sat in my office with her legs spread. Did I mention that this girl was 12? People can be so stupid. Why are we so surprised that most of the schools have to do special seminars on bullying? The parents are doing it every day. I've decided that I have quite a bit of job security. I don't think anyone wants my job.
Also, this week I was in on a meeting with administration and the guy that is head of security for the district. Well that was certainly sobering. This department falls under the Federal Homeland Security. I guess I am glad that there is such a well-researched, well-planned security process in place. Actually, it just makes me sad and question how did we get to this place in society. When I was a kid, if a child was walking home from school and accepted a ride, do you know what your mom would have asked first? "Did you say thank you?" Anyway, the responsibility of this job and the safety of over 1,000 children and adults does weigh on me sometimes. You just pray that there is never an opportunity to use your training.
I have to leave you with a funny story though. I had a student sent down by a substitute for a disciplinary referral. This is a 12 year old boy who is on a low level academically and much lower emotionally. He had a little meltdown in class, telling the teacher that he was nuts among other things. Anyway, he was sent down and because there was no one to handle a disciplinary, I just had him sit in my office until the period was over and then go on to his next class. Well, he was happy as a clam working on something in his notebook. I was impressed. Then he said that he needed some tape. Probably tore something in his exuberance. I turn around to work on something and when I turned back around he was not in his chair. I called for him and he sat back down looking like "the cat who swallowed the canary". Finally, I see it. He has made a sign saying what an amazing and sweet principal that we have and other niceties scrawled in a childlike handwriting. Then he taped it to the Principal's door. OMG. Actually it was probably pretty smart. If you are coming down on a disciplinary, might as well go out as a hero. These guys crack me up.
Well, time to get a little sleep. Another day of fun and games tomorrow.

Later.
